Alphonse Elric is Edward's younger brother, though they are very close in age. He is much calmer, shyer, and more reluctant than his brother. Al is also a skilled alchemist, although he is nowhere near as talented as Edward. However, he doesn't seem to mind not being in the spotlight.

As a result of their failed human transmutation, Al has lost his entire body. His only means of existance is his soul that is bound to the suit of armor he inhabits by a blood seal that Edward sacrificed his right arm to activate. He does not eat, sleep, or feel physical pain. Because of his condition, Alphonse was unable to take the State Alchemist certification test, as the military would realize the brothers attempt at forbidden alchemy. Therefore, he is somewhat dependent on Edward in order to reach their ultimate goal of regaining what they lost.

Alphonse possesses a strong affinity for kitties, and always enjoys being pat on the head and treated like a child since, due to his size, most people forget that he is one.

Rie Kugimiya is Alphonse's voice actress in Japan. She has worked on numerous anime in the span of only a few years. As talented as she is at portraying young boys, such as Tio in Gash Bell and Kouta in Midori no Hibi, she also shines when she gets to play girls such as Alex Louis Armstrong's sister; Catherine Elle Armstrong!

Aaron Dismuke is very good at sounding like a young boy, because he is a young boy! He was only twelve years old when he recorded Alphonse. In addition to Fullmetal Alchemist, Aaron has also worked on Kiddy Grade as Yott and Fruits Basket as Hiro Sohma, and more recently he voiced Ion Fortuna from Trinity Blood.
