Just as Number 48 is about to tell Edward what he knows of the Philosopher's Stone, Envy and lust interfere and destroy his blood seal, killing him. They quickly do the same to 48's brother before he can say anything else about the stone. Envy approches Edward, who has been watching on in shock, and the boy is quick to jump up and clap his hands to transmute a weapon, which only fully disables his already fragile automail. Envy knocks him out, glad to have been spare the annoyance of a fight. Lust and Envy decide to blow up the facility, as they no longer need it to create stones.

In the midst of his battle with Barry the Chopper, Alphonse is distracted by the thought of whether or not Barry could be right about his memories. He suddenly remembers that Edward had something important to tell him, but was interrupted and didn't get the chance. Barry takes advantage of Alphonse's focus being shifted as an opportunity to strike, but just as he raises his cleaver Maria Ross and Denny Broch arrive and shoot it out of his hand.

While Barry decides what his next move should be, they all hear a strange rumbling followed suddenly by a huge explosion. Barry makes his escape while Second Lieutenant Ross is busy trying to keep Al from running into the building to retrieve Edward. Envy appears amidst the debris, carry an unconcious Edward over his shoulder. As Sergeant Broch rushes to Ross's side to help with Edward, Envy disappears and the soldiers flee the area with the Elric brothers just in time to avoid being crushed by the collapsing building. Barry watches Laboratory Five crumble from atop a nearby building and knows Number 48 is dead and that if he returns, the homonculi will only kill him too. He disappears into the night, eager to enjoy his newfound freedom.

In the close by Central Prison, the vibrations and commotion from the explosion have excited the prisoners. While they wonder if there has been an earthquake, the prisoner Kimbley knows the sound of an explosion taking out a building, and is giddy from the event.

The next day, Edward is recovering in a local clinic, and Lieutenant Ross admonishes him for disobeying Major Armstrong's orders and putting himself in such a dangerous situation. However they quickly apologize for speaking to him in such a way, as Edward's State Alchemist title gives him a rank equal to Major and they could be discharged by one word from him. He reassures them that he didn't become a State Alchemist for the rank, and lets them know they don't need to be so formal with him. Wondering where Al is, Sergeant Broch tells Ed that they gave him the same lecture, and punched him, which hurt Broch's hand. Edward winces in pain as he laughs, and remembers something else he's going to get yelled at for.

Back in Resembool, Winry answers the phone and is surprised that Edward wants her to travel to Central to repair his arm. She screams at him for getting into a fight and wrecking it, but is quick to agree to the trip due to her guilt over the missing bolt she found after his departure. As he hangs up the phone, he is embarrassed by Sergeant Broch asing if Winry is his girlfriend, and insists that she's merely his automail mechanic and he's not interested in a girlfriend. On their way back to Ed's room, he notices Alphonse sitting by himself and calls out to him. It's obvious by Al's demeanor that something is on his mind. Remembering Barry's words, Alphonse can't stop himself from breaking a mirror in the restroom.

Major Armstrong is waiting for Winry when she arrives at the train station in Central and she's slightly miffed that Ed didn't come to meet her. She is shocked to find out that he couldn't come to get her because he's in the hospital. Elsewhere, Lieutenant Colonel Hughes is bragging over the phone about his daughter and wife to Colonel Mustang, still stationed in East City. Changing the subject, Mustang reports that the whereabouts of Scar are still unknown as the explosion during his run-in with Lust and Gluttony has left numerous bodies, all burned almost beyond recognition. Due to the lack of reports of sightings, however, it is suspected that Scar is dead. Hughes asks if the Elric's guards will still be necessary and relates that the men responsible for managing the Elric's have all been killed, and that Colonel Mustang might be relocated to Central soon. After Mustang hangs up on Hughes, Hughes realizes he forgot to tell Roy that Ed is in the hospital.

Back in Edward's room, Winry is shocked at the severity of Edward's injuries, and it is revealed that Major Armstrong did the most damage when he hugged Ed after he learned where he was. Winry feels terrible because she believes that Edward is only in the hospital because she didn't build his automail better. However, after Edward insists that she is a wonderful mechanic and it was all his fault, she realizes he never even knew the bolt was missing, and is quick to gain her good nature again, until she sees that he hasn't drunk his milk. While she breates him about staying the size of a pea if he doesn't drink it, Alphonse quietly exits the room.

While Winry repairs Edward's arm, he remarks how strangly Al has been acting since the incident at the Laboratory. They wonder what might be wrong, and just as Winry finishes her repairs, Colonel Hughes appears, and Edward introduces him to Winry. Hughes tells Edward that he dropped by because he has news about Scar and that he won't be needing his bodyguards soon. Winry is livid that Edward has been doing such dangerous work he even needs bodyguards, and that he and Al never tell her anything about what's going on with them. She puts her jacket on a says goodbye for the night, as she still needs to find somewhere to stay. Colonel Hughes offers his home to her, and even though she politely refuses, he drags her off forcibly to spend the night with his family.

On their way to his house, Winry asks why he's buying so much stuff, and he replies that it's his daughter's third birthday. Gracia and Elicia greet them at the door, and Winry is charmed by Elicia's personality immediately. They are glad to have her in their home, especially on such a special day. Later, during Elicia's party, Winry repairs a small toy for her and Hughes asks her about growing up with the Elrics. She explains that their houses were close together, so they've always been friends, and that they are like brothers to her. She worries about their well-being on their journey and wishes they would tell her more. Hughes explains to her that men prefer to shoulder pain themselves rather than have their loved ones worry about them, which is why they don't tell her as much as she would like to know. When they truly need her to be there for them, they'll finally tell her everything. After the party, Winry tries to leave, but Elicia insists she stay the night with them, and Winry is happy to feel like she has a little sister.

At breakfast the next day Edward's forced to face his milk again and wants Al to drink it for them, but realizes he can't. Al tells Edward he needs to take care of his body, to which Ed responds that he won't drink what he doesn't like and that he's growing without it. He tells Al that he's luck to have such a big body, and Alphonse blows up at him that he never asked for the body he has just as Winry enters the room.
